From October 23-31, Red Ribbon Week is celebrated in elementary, middle and high school. It brings awareness to the effects of using drugs.

“It’s fun to dress up for Red Ribbon Week, and I also support the message,” SMS 7th grader Jacqueline Rodriguez said.

Red Ribbon Week has been around since the 1980s. It originated as a tribute to a fallen DEA special agent, Enrique Camerena.

“Red Ribbon Week shows people the bad things that happen when they do drugs,” Rodriguez said.

This year, SMS students attended an assembly about the dangers of vaping.

“I was shocked to see the effects of vaping,” SMS journalism teacher Caitlin Drott said. “I hope students learned to avoid this new trend.”
